Wow! Thanks hun. I really appreciate the salute and the kind words. :)
I share your frustration with regards to the disproportionate positive representations of PoC not just on Tumblr but in the world wide media. That said, the best way to change that is use the powers that are at our disposal and lead by example. I’ll be honest, I started this blog not with the hat of a young woman of colour but as a young emerging photographer. I shot what, who & where I knew and didn’t give a second thought to the story it would tell or the empowerment that would be felt by any audience. But since, I’ve received other encouraging private messages articulating the same message. When it comes down to it, I’m just a girl with a camera and a Tumblr account. We have a lot more agency than we think to change/mould our image as PoC, its about time we use it for something worthwhile.
Check out this video: it speaks to our conversation. :) http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story.html
Hi Beast!
What inspires me most is true emotion. I’m very sensitive to emotions and find a lot of beauty in the true expression of people’s identity. I don’t always visualize an image before capturing it. Because of the nature of my style of shooting, I like documentary style photography, a large element of it is spontaneity so you just always have to be on alert. Though the creative part of me does entail a degree of imagination and creating an image; A Mother’s Burden is a good example of that.
Thanks for the questions. :) <3
